A LEGACY

Have you ever considered leaving a legacy in your will to the GWSR?

This is one way of ensuring that the love of railway heritage and the vision which we all share can continue to develop after we are no longer able to give active support.

A legacy can be a specific sum, an asset or a percentage (as in 1% or 5%) of your residuary estate. Residuary estate is what is left after any inheritance tax, other liabilities, administration and other specific legacies have been paid.

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) is always grateful for funds to help progress the development of the Railway and it is easy to make a suitable provision in your will.

If you have not yet made a will, then perhaps you should consider consulting a solicitor or other professional advisor to discuss making one. If you die without a will, the law sets out who inherits your estate on the basis of a standard formula and this might not be what you would wish.

If you already have a will, it is simple and quick to add an additional provision - called a codicil - that can be to the benefit of GWSR.

LEAVING MONEY TO THE GWSR

The GWSR is a plc (public limited company) and is the owner of the assets of the railway. It operates the services and also has responsibility for the future development of services and extension of the line. The plc is in turn owned by its share holders.

A legacy would be spent according to the then current needs of the Company as determined by the Board of Directors

A sample wording suitable for including in a will is:

I give to Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway plc (Registered in England & Wales No 1576947) of The Railway Station, Toddington, Gloucs GL54 5DT  [the sum of £?? ] or [?% of my residuary estate] with freedom to spend it as income and declare that the receipt in writing of the Finance Director of the Company shall be good discharge to my Executors

If you would wish to leave a larger sum for a specific purpose or an asset to GWSR, it would be greatly appreciated if you could talk in confidence to the Chairman in the first place. Please write to him at The Railway Station marking your envelope "confidential".
