Cadbury No. 1 – the diminutive tank engine that hauled the very first train on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway – will emerge from the David Page shed gleaming like a brand-new pack of Bourneville chocolate in time for the Cotswold Festival of Steam, 23rd to 26th May.

Getting to the GWR by public transport during the Cotswold Festival of Steam couldn’t be easier this year. Because Sunday 24th May, you can take a classic bus ride from Cheltenham right to the GWR’s Cheltenham Racecourse station and enjoy the Festival by starting from there.
GWR conjures up a very special visitor

The biggest and heaviest star of the Harry Potter films is paying the GWR a visit. The ‘star’ is the dark red steam locomotive, no. 5972 Olton Hall, which appears as Hogwarts Castle, hauling the Hogwarts Express that takes Harry Potter and his young wizard companions from Kings Cross to Hogwarts School.

The Festival has become a firm fixture in the calendar of important events in Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds. 2009 marks 25 years since the present-day GWR’s first train tentatively set out from Toddington station on a journey of about 700 yards to Didbrook.
